If there’s one thing we have in common with Oprah, it’s that WE. LOVE. BREAD! We’ll take it any way we can get it — light, fluffy pancakes and waffles, flaky biscuits, chewy bagels and pretzels, and soft, slightly sweet kolache — but namely rich, buttery pastries. Luckily for us, we have reached carb nirvana in our own backyard at KNEAD Bakehouse & Provisions.
KNEAD Bakehouse & Provisions specializes in freshly baked bread and pastries. With owner and head baker AJ Brown at the helm, KNEAD offers two and only two types of bread, both of which are of the sourdough variety: Rustic Country and Rich Brioche. The former is the basis for many of the sandwiches on the menu; the latter is the star of the baked goods. A minimalist at heart, Brown believes good bread should consist of flour, salt, water and starter. Nothing more, nothing less. Oh, how spot on he is.
Like the bread, KNEAD Bakehouse & Provisions’ menu is simple; the execution, phenomenal. A few selections of soups and sandwiches are rounded out by pastries, coffee, tea, juices and housemade sodas. The pastry selections change daily to keep things fresh. We sampled the Vanilla Bean Glaze & Chocolate Chip Donut, Cinnamon Roll Morning Bun and Cranberry & Apple Poptart, though we could’ve contently walked away with everything from the case. A bread making passion apparent with everything made in house from scratch, Brown delivers quality you rarely find elsewhere.
Vanilla Bean Glaze & Chocolate Chip Donut
The light, fluffy Vanilla Bean Glaze & Chocolate Chip Donut absolutely blew us away. So much, in fact, that we may never be able to revisit a regular doughnut shop again. The rich brioche dough is so soft and pillowy that diving in via knife and fork isn’t an option. The moderately sweet glaze allowed just the right touch of vanilla flavor to shine through, while mini chocolate chips added an extra hint of sweetness without overpowering the donut’s simplicity.
Cinnamon Roll Morning Bun
Talk about a cinnamon roll on steroids! The Cinnamon Roll Morning Bun is layers of airy, flaky and buttery dough with ribbons of cinnamon sugar swirled throughout. Complete with a slathering of rich and creamy frosting, the Cinnamon Roll Morning Bun is not to be missed.
Cranberry & Apple Poptart
Forget everything you know about boring boxed Poptarts and think warm, flaky pie crust with a thick layer of sweet sticky homemade jam and a generous coating of vanilla bean glaze. These aren’t your kids’ Poptarts — they’re so much better.
You should probably stop what you’re doing and head to KNEAD for a slice of carb heaven. Your new year’s resolution can wait.
