It’s officially summer in St. Louis, and as the humidity rises with the temperature, St. Louisans seek out all things cold, notably hitting up the ice cream shops around town. Like watching our boys with the birds on the bat play baseball, grabbing a few scoops to take on a leisurely stroll — consuming both cream and conversation — has become a local pastime. It’s one of our few joys during the dog days of summer.
Luckily we have a plethora of solid options to choose from, but very few can hold a cone to Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Creamery. Housed in a shop adorned with benches made of wood and wrought iron, a brass bar, antique chandeliers, and chalkboard walls, Clementine’s feels like it’s been in Lafayette Square for decades even if only for a couple of years.
Touting itself as “St. Louis’ first and only all-natural microcreamery,” Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Creamery is constantly churning out unique and wonderful flavors both in the nice (nonalcoholic) and naughty (yep, boozy) variety. Previous creative concoctions that piqued our interest were Kimchi (nice) and Soju Melon (naughty), the results of a collaboration with Seoul Taco, as well as Pink Martini (naughty), and most recently, Black Cherry Ash (naughty), churned with Italian Amarena cherries and infused with activated charcoal. You read that right — CHARCOAL!
You may already be overwhelmed with the various options at your disposal, but fear not, it’s normal for customers to ask for samples at Clementine’s using itty-bitty silver spoons (no plastic here!) that were so incredibly adorable we wanted to take a set with us.
For our latest 3 Scoops adventure, we sampled the Boozy Banana Rum, Cashew Salted Caramel, and Pistachio flavors, none of which disappointed.
Boozy Banana Rum (Naughty)
Made with roasted bananas, Vietnamese cinnamon and spiced rum, the Boozy Banana Rum is reminiscent of a tasty tiki cocktail, but it’s the butterscotch caramel swirl that puts this flavor over the edge with a Bananas Foster vibe. All that were missing alongside this boozy scoop were a Red Stripe beer and Bob Marley tunes playing in the background.
Cashew Salted Caramel (Nice; Vegan)
Who needs dairy when vegan ice cream is this delightful? Made with cashew butter, dates for sweetness, and a pinch of salt to round out the flavors, the Cashew Salted Caramel is velvety, smooth and rich enough to stand on its own sans the milk and cream.
If it’s not the pretty green color that makes us swoon, it’s the Pistachio’s perfect balance of salty and sweet, thanks to the Sicilian pistachios churned into the flavor. This is simple, well-crafted ice cream at its best.
With scoops like these and new flavors being created every month, it’s no wonder Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Creamery continues to expand with plans for even more St. Louis-area locations in the future.
